The Basics of Detoxification

Our boDetoxificationdies are exposed to hundreds of toxins through many of our favorite and not-so-favorite products and activities. From our daily jobs to weekend barbecues to cleaning our homes, we are continually exposed to environmental toxins. We are also exposed to toxins that are produced through natural bodily processes. When overexposure occurs, the toxins interrupt the body’s ability to function normally, interfering with DNA, protein, and cellular membranes. Short-term exposure to heavy toxins can cause headaches, fatigue, and nausea while long-term exposure can lead to more chronic health conditions.

The process of cleansing the body of toxins is called detoxification. All cells are involved in the natural detoxification process, but the liver is the body’s designated filter and purification system.

Three Phases of Detoxification

In the first phase of detoxification, the toxins are metabolized by detoxifying enzymes, which make the toxins more water soluble. These less toxic molecules are more easily transported into the blood, through the kidneys, and out of the body through urination. After phase one, many toxins also go through phase two. In phase two, water-soluble small molecules bind to the toxins, increasing their solubility. The body attaches sulfates, amino acids, and glucuronic acid to the molecules. If a person is exposed to heavy amounts of toxins, GSH (glutathione) levels are depleted and the natural detoxification process is interrupted. During phase three, the toxins are eliminated from the cells.
