Heavy Metals in Baby Food – What Should You Know?

You might have heard that the US House Committee on Oversight and Reforms has issued a report that claims some commercial baby foods contain dangerous levels of arsenic, lead, cadmium and mercury. This could be an alarming concern, but what should you know about heavy metals found in baby food?

Four companies, Nurture, Beech-Nut, Hain, and Gerber, produced baby food that contained arsenic, lead and cadmium. Mercury was found in food made by the Nurture company. While not all commercially available baby foods were tested, the report should be taken seriously, as the developing brain can be affected by the presence of toxic metals. At first glance, the solution might be to switch to organic baby food, but that isn’t necessarily the best option. Many organic baby foods contain brown rice, which naturally contains arsenic. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the FDA both recommend babies consume minimal amounts of rice.

The FDA is beginning to monitor heavy metals in commercial baby foods. Until  more progress is made, it’s difficult to determine the safety level for each individual company and their food. One tip is to begin making your own baby food from natural products by steaming foods until soft and then blending them. The American Academy of Pediatrics also recommends varying the grains your child eats, providing a variety of foods in your child’s diet, and checking your water quality to make sure your home doesn’t use old lead pipes.
