Chelation Therapy and Its Use in the Treatment of Diabetes

EDTA Chelation Therapy

Diabetes is a major health risk, complicating the lives of millions of Americans. One in seven adults lives with this disease, and a major percentage of diabetic deaths can be attributed to coronary disease or peripheral artery disease as a contributing factor. Along with the risk associated with high blood sugar, diabetes can have a devastating effect on cardiovascular health. Chelation therapy is one option to help combat the effects of poor cardiovascular health.

Developed in the 1930s, chelation therapy was designed to remove heavy metal toxins from the blood of heavily poisoned patients. The most common culprits contributing to heavy metal poisoning are arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury, but there are a number of other factors that can lead to heavy metal poisoning, including certain foods, inadequately coated food containers, ingesting a lead-based paint, some medicines, and air or water pollution.

During chelation therapy, a chelator molecule attaches to the metal in blood and is then eliminated from the body through the kidneys during urination. According to a report published by Mount Sinai Medical Center, a clinical trial was conducted in 2002 to study the use of chelation therapy to treat cardiovascular disease. The trial lasted for a decade and the results were positive. Patients in the study who received chelation therapy as opposed to the placebo group experienced an 18% reduction in catastrophic cardiovascular events, including heart attacks, strokes, hospitalizations, and death. Diabetic patients achieved even more astounding results by reducing similar events by 41% and a 43% reduction in death over a period of five years. A second study is currently being supported to specifically study the effects of chelation therapy in diabetes patients who had experienced a previous heart attack.
